Vacation in Hawaii, Part One - June 2007

We decided to take a trip to the big island of Hawaii with my mom and her boyfriend.  It was a blast.

And we're off!  The obligatory airplane shot.

Coming in for the landing in Hilo, lots of huge fluffy clouds.

After being over nothing but ocean for hours, finally seeing some land was a welcome sight.

We stayed in the top floor condo of this building.  It was a nice joint except that it had no air conditioning and
I quite literally sweated my ass off.  No, seriously, I don't have one at all anymore.  Medical staff have been
consulted, and I'm hoping ot have an artifical ass installed by next week.

The view from the top deck of our reminded me a lot of Thailand for some reason.  I dunno it was
hot and there were a lot of trees, so why not.

There was a dead roach in the place when we arrived, an ominous sign but I never saw another one the rest
of the time in the joint.  I used it as a chance to test out the macro lens - something I used quite liberally on this
trip as you will soon see.

These next few photos are all macro shots taken around the grounds of the condo complex...

Palm tree weirdness.

I tried to get a close up of the stamen/stigma/whatever that thing is called.  Don't look at me like I'm an asshole,
I ain't no botanist.

Here Chelsea is staring at the ocean and laughing.  I have no idea what she is laughing at.  Quite possibly,
nothing, as she might be a crazy person.

A palm nut?  I don't know what these are called but they were everywhere.   I wanted to throw them at random
strangers but I managed ot barely contain myself.

There was a lot of sitting on the beach during this trip, as you might imagine.  And sometimes, shaved ice
was consumed at the same time.

A few macro shots of the clams in the rocks...

I really like this one cause it looks like a creek bed or some manner of valley in a model, or maybe I'm just high.

In case you weren't aware, there is a lot of lava on this island.  They say if you try to take any off of the island
with you it causes bad luck.  I was going to test this theory but Chelsea and my mom gave me such a hard time
I decided it wasn't worth the effort.

One of my favorite photos of the whole trip, and it was entirely accidental - I was just trying to take a photo of
this small tide pool, not initially seeing the reflection, but it came out pretty much perfect.

There was another really calm tide pool where you could even snap a few pics of the tropical fish.

...And also the sea urchins.

Newsflash:  there are a lot of palm trees on Hawaii.  And I may have taken photos of all of them.

Art photo!  A dead crab on some lava rocks, now that shit is DEEP.

Maybe my favorite part of the trip was the fact these green sea turtles were EVERYWHERE.  It was probably
one of the coolest things I've ever been able to do, to stand right beside these amazing creatures as they did
their thing.  Needless to say, there were a lot of photos taken of turtles.

That night we had dinner at this place.  Tasty pizza, and good beer too according to my dinner companions.

And here we have my impression of a jack-o-lantern.

Me Mum, who would have no part of impersonating storied halloween archetypes.

Bryan, mom's boyfriend, and proficient drinker of beers.

Why not close out the day with some silhouette shots of the rarest of commodities, palm trees...
